How to Select Vinyl Flooring
The factors you should consider when selecting vinyl flooring include thickness, wear layer, color, and width.
In terms of color, you can opt for printed vinyl which is the most affordable. But this option gives you a surface that easily scratched. Inlaid vinyl has a wood-like appearance and is quite resistant to scratch. If you are working on a heavy traffic area, glued vinyl will be more suitable and it's good for permanent installation. Besides, it's resistant to scratch, slipping or peeling off, giving you value for its cost.
For uneven floors, 5-8 mm thick planks will hide away any imperfections on your floor. Their appealing look is like that of real wood. Besides, they are highly durable. They are most suited for application on high traffic areas. A moderate traffic area such as your living room requires vinyl flooring of 3 2-4.0 mm thickness. These are moderately durable and less costly. In low traffic areas in your home, you can use 2-3 mm thickness. This is more affordable although it cannot hide imperfections on uneven floors.
You should choose wear layers at least 20 mm or 0.02 inch thick for your high traffic areas like restaurants. Moderate traffic areas will require a wear layer of at least 10 mm (0.01"). A no-wax coat made of vinyl or urethane offers the most affordable option for wear layer. But this wears out really fast.
It's advisable that you choose standard width planks as opposed to wider ones. This is because wider vinyl planks cannot sit well on uneven floors.
